Vehicles (Planes, Buses, Boats, SnowBlowers,
Trucks)
Because of the extremes down here, we have
the most bizarre ways to travel, move snow, build roads and
other various needs of transporation.
Planes:
We fly from New Zealand to McMurdo Antarctica (8
hour flight) in US Airplanes (C130s). The planes land on the
temporary sea ice for most of the season, until the ice gets
too thin to hold the weight of the plane. At that point, the
planes are equipped with ski's and all planes land on snow
covered permanent sea ice (never melts out).

Vehicles/Trucks/Snow Travel:

One of our busses that transport 30 + people at a time. The
bus transports people from the airplane into McMurdo, mostly
across temporary sea ice. Pictured above the bus's rear wheel
has broken through the ice and is stuck.

Photo of an IceBreaker, US Coast Guard ship
that sails into McMurdo once a year, breaking the ice as they
go. You can see the ice path they broke up, getting into port.
